I’m feeling the pressure of a book deadline. It’s my first big book deadline and it’s approaching quickly. I’m making good progress, but the pressure is intense. When you’re writing for the Lord, the evil one is going to try to stop you. He isn’t going to make it easy. He will try to fill your head with doubts and so many questions. Writing a book on a deadline is a new process for me and I’m writing a type of book I’ve never written before. I’m not going to lie, it’s kind of scary. But let me tell you how God has been encouraging me as I work to finish my Howie and Friends devotional.

When I was a kid, my favorite book was The Muffin Muncher by Stephen Cosgrove. We had several of the Serendipity books, but The Muffin Muncher was my favorite. I adored that muffin munching dragon!

Today my dad asked me to order something for him from Amazon. In the process of doing that, Amazon showed me “Top picks for you” and what do I see? The Muffin Muncher right next to Howie’s Broken Hee-Haw! When I was a kid obsessed with a cute little dragon, I never dreamed that one day I would write a book that other kids would love as much as I loved The Muffin Muncher.

Then there is 1 Corinthians 15:58 (NLT). It says, “So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.”

No matter what happens with this book, what I am doing is not useless. God is already using the work in my own life so I will continue to work enthusiastically for the Lord. It is an honor to write for Him and His beloved children.

This book is bathed in prayer. When the “what if” questions come, I take those thoughts captive and give them to the Lord. I tell the evil one to SHUT UP! and I sink into the armor of God. So many of you are praying for me and I’m incredibly thankful. I need your prayers and I feel them. Writing is not a solitary profession. Thank you for battling with me as I write. We’re in this together and God is even now being glorified!

I’m thankful I fell on my way to the post office and @scatterbraincafe and not on my way home when I had a coffee in my hand! Now I’m enjoying my coffee and the beautiful snow globe snow from the safety of my comfy chair. ☃️

Happy New Year, friends! Do you choose a word of the year or a verse to focus on for the year? I don’t do it every year, and sometimes I pick one and then forget all about it. But I can’t get “Immanuel, which means God is with us” out of my head so that’s what I chose for 2023. I can’t think of a better thing for me to think about this year than the fact that God is with me. If you picked a word or verse for 2023 I’d love to hear what it is. Share yours in the comments! I let the cold brew sit in the fridge for 18 hours. The taste is pretty good, but it’s not as strong as I’d like. I’ll let it sit at least 24 hours next time. I added some heavy cream to it today, but I think tomorrow I’ll add some chocolate milk instead. I would say this is a good first attempt, but I have some perfecting to do.

My brother got me a cold brew coffee maker for Christmas! This is my first batch. I started with dark roast Scatterbrain coffee, then added cacao powder and vanilla extract. I’m going to let it sit in the grid for 18 hours this first time and adjust from there. I’m so excited to see how my first batch turns out! It should be ready at 9:30 tomorrow morning. 🥳

My dad and I have a Christmas morning tradition. We go in search of coffee and something beautiful to photograph. All of our local coffee shops are closed so this year we took the back road to Eau Claire and got some delicious coffee at @ecdc.coffee - and cookies as big as my face. God gave us so many gifts again this morning! The snow is still frozen to the trees and it’s incredibly beautiful. I have never seen snow stay on trees for so long, it feels like you’re driving through Narnia. On the way home, we saw a golden eagle swoop down on the road right in front of us. He was huge and glorious! I was so glad I had my cell phone handy just in case. We drove a little further when we saw a beautiful pheasant on the road. Two cars drove right by him and he didn’t move at all. We slowed down to take pictures and he hopped to the side of the road so I could take his picture, then flew away. I love our Christmas morning tradition. It’s not about the coffee, it’s about the special time together and the gifts God gives us along the way. Merry Christmas, friends. I pray God gives you a special gift with the ones you love today.

Before I start a writing day, I read one of the devotions in this book from @jordanraynor. Each day it seems to be just the encouragement and motivation I need. During the week, I’m working on my next book project, Howie and Friends: 90 Devotions for Kids. Today I’m working on an article that’s due on Monday.

My never-ending cold seems to be worse again today and I’d honestly rather go back to bed. But I have a deadline I want to honor and I don’t like breaking my commitments. So I will write.

I was so encouraged by Jordan’s words this morning, especially the words I marked in red. I know God has called me to this and I know He will enable me to do the things He’s called me to do. Today I’m writing of the hope found in Jesus and as I do, I find hope for my own spirit and soul. God is so good!
