A Taste of Glory

Our recent raptor adventure was, well, to use an overused word, epic. You know the story of The Rahabilitated Raptor and you know how I captured A Double Beauty; but you haven’t heard the best story of all!

After we released Little Screech the phone call came in about a sick juvenile bald eagle. My parents and I looked at each other and all nodded; we were in! Plans for ice cream were off, we were on a mission. We hopped in our vehicle and followed Karla and her husband’s bright yellow car.

We didn’t know how far it was, or where it was. We just excitedly followed that little yellow car. They try to release raptors in the evening so they have the cover of night to regain their berings and get themselves settled back into nature. So, as we drove the sun began to set.

You guys, it was incredible. Let me tell you, there were more “ooh’s” and “aah’s” coming from our car than a crowd watching fireworks.  All I had was my cell phone and I was furiously snapping away. I had to, the sky changed every other minute and every twist and turn we took presented us with a different view.

Dad would try to slow down for me so I could get a clear photo, but we had to keep sight of that little yellow car or we’d be lost. We also had to battle hills, forests, and tall corn. Folks, it was a challenge to get the perfect shot!

Before we knew it we were driving gravel roads and best and the brightest of the sunset had passed. Our ooh’s and aah’s turned to giggles and chuckles as we imagined the sound of banjos ringing through the hills.

Finally we arrived at a very nice house with a beautifully landscaped yard. The eagle was there waiting for us and as the sky dimmed to shades of pink then gray, we loaded the juvenile bird in the vehicle for the long drive to get help.

I’m sorry to say that the eagle was too sick and was put down. I’m thankful that we were there to help and were able to get it to the center quickly so that it didn’t have to suffer any longer.

I’ll never forget this glorious sunset or our raptor adventure. God’s fingerprints were visible all along the journey, including this glorious sunset He painted across the sky. As I sat in awe, taking in every shifting color and illuminated cloud, I couldn’t help but think that this incredible sunset is just a small taste of the glory of God.
