The Seagull Serenade

Do you know what that sound is, Highness? Those are the Shrieking Eels — if you don’t believe me, just wait. They always grow louder when they’re about to feed on human flesh. If you swim back now, I promise, no harm will come to you. I doubt you will get such an offer from the Eels.

If you recognize the above quote from the movie The Princess Bride you’re my kind of people! That scene flashed through my mind as I stood outside the bathroom on the ferry, waiting for my turn.

Maybe it was because we were on a boat, maybe it was because of the creepy sound they were making, probably it was a combination of the two. There were so many seagulls and they were all squawking terribly.

The noise so many seagulls made was like a serial killer’s laughter echoing through an empty warehouse. Okay, so maybe my writer’s imagination ran a little wild, but it did sound like they were laughing at me.

Come to find out, the seagulls that had been creeping me out all week are called Laughing Gulls. Really, it says so on this information sign I saw when we were at Oak Island Lighthouse. See?

Now, I don’t have anything against these seagulls. In fact, I rather like them. Their laugh however, I could do without. I feel as if they’re mocking me. Maybe they were laughing at my hair blowing all over my face, or my dress that wouldn’t stay in place. It was rather amusing.

So there I stood outside the bathroom being mocked by laughing gulls while they swarmed the end of the boat waiting for a free lunch. What really concerns me with large flocks of birds like that isn’t their laugh or their pointy little beaks, but their keen ability to use humans as target practice for their own bathroom needs.

Thankfully I was protected by a slight overhang and, as you can see in the photograph, their attention was elsewhere. So I grabbed my camera and captured the swarm in all of its black and white glory. Moody clouds made the perfect backdrop and I got the last laugh as I captured their frenzied flight.
