The Surprise Sunset

It was a day like any other. Nothing remarkable or extraordinary happened – until it was time to shut myself in for the night.

I live on the edge of the country and even though there are not many people passing by I like to close my curtains early. I don’t like it when others can see in and I can’t see out. Call it paranoia, but it is what it is!

On this particular night I sat in my chair longer than usual before getting up and closing the curtains in the rest of the house. The two windows I could see out were already shaded for the night.

I made the rounds, sealing myself in the safety of cloth window dressings. There are only two windows on the north side of the house and by the time I made it to my office windows I was in my routine, paying little attention to what I was doing.

When something bright caught my eye I looked up to see a beautiful sunset, visible just over the trees at the end of my driveway. This sunset was unique, as all sunsets are, causing the clouds to glow in ripples, like waves rolling up on the edge of a sandy beach.

I grabbed my cell phone and headed out to capture this surprising vision of beauty before it was no more, never to be seen again. I darkened my settings to capture the brightness of the setting sun behind the silhouette of the tree arching over my drive.

I love silhouettes because they add an element of mystery to a photograph, stripping away the ordinary to reveal something extraordinary. When I look at this photograph it could be anywhere. The house in the background is gone, the driveway has disappeared, the street has vanished. What’s left is a beautiful scene which anyone can easily place themselves in.
