The Deadly Waterfall

The tingling sensation in my fingers was the first hint that something was wrong. I knew what was coming, yet I pushed forward. At the bottom of the long, winding path was a waterfall that needed to be photographed.

I was on a waterfall hunt in western North Carolina with my good friend Erin. We were in search of Triple Falls outside of the wonderful little town of Brevard. There was a really nice path that led down to the falls and we thought it would be a quick walk.

We underestimated the distance and the incline and forgot our water in the car. But there was a waterfall to be found so even though my fingers had started to tingle I kept walking.

I was not disappointed. The view of the falls was incredible and I got the photograph I was chasing.

Then there was the walk back up to the car. I’ve had heat stroke before I knew the signs. However, there was only one way to get back to the car so I put one foot in front of the other and kept going.

Stopping to take photographs was a great excuse to rest for a minute, but soon my hands were shaking too much to hold the camera steady and I was dizzy.

Pretty soon the world started to go fuzzy and I had to call my friend Erin back to help me. I looped my arm through hers and she let me lean on her and sweat on her as she led me back to the car.

I don’t remember much of the last part of the walk, but pretty soon we were back at the car. I chugged some car warmed water and ate some of the super salty beef jerky that was waiting for us. Extra lucky for me were the salt tablets Erin had in her purse.

As Erin drove on to our next adventure I recovered in the passenger seat and avoided a trip to the emergency room that was too far away to do me much good. Lesson learned.
